The trees that stood tall and magnificent during the
day became looming and terrifying during the night to most people. But not to
me, I was a wolf on a mission. The full moon long had forcibly turned me into a
werewolf and I intended to fully utilize my increased strength and speed. There
was little in the forest that could stop a determined werewolf for long. I
leapt and bounded through the trees, using their trunks and branches as
trampolines. Using my reflexes and muscles well, I propelled myself forward
with burst after burst of well-timed explosive power.
It was dark as night could be, but the light of the
full moon coupled with my enhanced night vision as a werewolf made it almost as
clear as day to me. From the tiny ant crawling on the branch forty-two feet in
front of me to the annoying chirps of the cicada that sounded a mating call
fifty-three feet away; I saw everything and heard everything. But most
importantly, I felt that Julian, my vampire lover was hanging in there, safe in
my arms.
I had escaped the Faculty of the Occult and
Supernatural back at college and long left their grounds. It was inconsiderate
of me to leave Professor Wolfenstein behind strapped
to that specimen dissection table but Alpha and Randall had stumbled in on us
just as the interrogation ended and I would have been caught and possibly fucked
again if I stayed. Throwing myself out of the third storey lab window, I was
now escaping as a werewolf with Julian in my arms.
He was holding on to me for dear life, perhaps not so
used to travelling at such speed and intensity. But for the first time ever, he
depended on me to get us through this as unmolested as possible. The trees flew
by in a whirr, their dark imposing figures failed to frighten me as I weaved
through them, making my way as quickly as I could to the abandoned farmhouse
that the professor had spoken of. It was the last place my brother, Gabriel was
said to reside in. There lay the key to finding my brother and possibly solving
the mystery behind the death of my parents and Gabriel's disappearance.
Did werewolves really finish them off, or was it
vampires, or even it Gabriel himself who did the dastardly deed? I wasn't sure,
but I knew I was close to finding out.
Even with my enhanced hearing, I detected no other
obvious signs of movement. Good. That meant that no one was chasing me. Alpha
and Randall were probably too busy untying Professor Wolfenstein
and rallying the other pack members to search for me in the morning or soon at
least. If I arrived at the farmhouse quickly enough, I would be able to
confront Gabriel with a few hours to spare. This was just perfect. Unless they
had decided to set out immediately, then I would just have enough time to get
the truth out of Gabriel and prepare for the final confrontation with my pack.
Was I even still part of the pack? I had no idea
whether I would be banished for my continuous misdeeds against pack law. But
there was no doubt in my mind that I simply had to continue on my mission to
seek the truth.
Julian relaxed in my hold, content to leave me alone
with my many thoughts and questions. I supposed he tired himself out with the
interrogation of Professor Wolfenstein. How long did
he go without blood anyway? When I first saw him during my maiden hunt he
seemed greatly weakened from the lack of feeding. And now, he barely had the
energy to escape on his own. I shuddered to think of how much stronger he could
become if only he cast away all thoughts of morality and fed on a human.
An odd looking building shrouded by mist appeared just
beyond the trees in front of me. Good. I would arrive at the abandoned
farmhouse where Gabriel was last said to be seen at soon. The wooden structure
was situated in a clearing, just near enough to the edge of the forest that was
adjacent to a farm. I had seen it numerous times on my way to the college
grounds and had often considering exploring it out of sheer curiosity. But now
there was no other place for me to go. My dorm definitely wasn't safe; the pack
would long have found me there and possibly punished me further or have me torn
apart for my disobedience. And now that I knew Gabriel was there, there was no
other way to go but forward.
I landed on a patch of soft, dry leaves. My legs had
exhausted themselves bringing me here as fast as they could. I'd collapse on
the forest floor to catch my breath now but I had Julian to think of. The full
moon was already revitalizing me with her life-giving rays so it wasn't that
bad. I peered through the trees to scan the exterior of the farmhouse. It
seemed uninhabited with absolutely zero signs of megafauna
around. Strange, Gabriel should have been there, unless it was a trap!
Gently letting a tired Julian down, I proceeded
towards the farmhouse with extreme caution. My mind gorged on the sensory
buffet that my werewolf powers provided me, warning me of any signs of possible
dangers or traps. There were surprisingly none. It seemed like any old
abandoned house.
I stood in front of its door, hearing the rotten wood
creak and moan, as if warning me not to enter. My furry arm pushed open the
door as gently as I could. Throwing myself into the blackness staring back at
me, I tumbled into the house, muscles tense, claws out, preparing to attack
anything that so much breathed within twenty feet of me.
Nothing.
The house was filled to the very brim with dead
silence. I breathed a disappointed sigh of relief. I should have found Gabriel
and ended things. But now that he wasn't even here, this lead was dead. I could
go back with the pack now, brave my punishment, and obediently wait for the
true pack alpha, my brother, Gabriel to return, or search the farmhouse for any
clues. Either way my journey would not end tonight.
At least Julian and I would have a place to rest
before setting out in the morning to God knows where.
Turning around, I made my way back to where I left
Julian. Carrying him in my arms once again I brought him into the abandoned
farmhouse and laid his sleepy body onto the bed. He looked so cute and peaceful
when he slept. Taking a nearby dusty cardboard box, I hung it up against the
window to block out the sun when it came up in the morning. If Julian wasn't
careful he would be fried to a crisp out in the day.
Once the window was blocked, the life-giving rays of
the full moon ceased to caress my body. I felt my bloodlust weaken slightly,
letting me regain control of my body and giving me the choice of whether I
wanted to transform back into my human form again. I did.
Once again as a human, I cursed silently about ruining
yet another perfectly good set of clothes before investigating the rest of the
farmhouse. The wood was old, the place was rundown, but it was as safe as I
hoped it was. Even if the rest of the pack organized themselves
and headed out as soon as they could, it would take them all day to find this
place.
Unless, of course, if they could smell us.
I burst out the front door, the full moon on my face,
once again turning me into a werewolf and headed straight up the nearest tree.
My nose twitched as I sniffed the air. The wind was blowing south, passing over
us and towards the college. That was good news at least; the pack would have
difficulty tracking us by smell if the wind was against them. But just to be
sure, I dashed to random parts of the forest, setting up mini campfires just to
throw off the scent. If the pack was lucky, they'd arrive at the farmhouse the
following morning. I returned to the forest clearing and leapt through the
trees, patrolling its perimeter without being seen. Someone had to keep watch
while Julian slept after all.
A dark shadowy figure appeared at the farmhouse door,
drawing my attention. I swooped down from the trees and landed in front of him.
It had better be Julian.
It was, and he seemed much better.
"You should get some rest," I muttered,
realizing he couldn't understand wolf tongue.
Entering the farmhouse where moonlight couldn't reach,
I turned back into a human and repeated my advice.
"But I'm much better now, thanks to you. Vampires
heal pretty quickly."
"Only if they've fed," I interjected,
"have you?"
Noticing a nearby animal with its blood drained was
more than enough of an answer.
"No wonder you're better," I smirked.
"Well yea, I watched you search for your brother
but he isn't here anymore, is he?"
I shook my head, disappointed that this lead had run
cold.
"Well... morning's coming up soon and we won't have
enough time to get to shelter once the sun rises. I guess we'll stay here for
the day?"
I nodded, "I guess..."

The sun had already crept in, drawing looks of terror
on Julian's face. I reached over to shut the door as quickly as I could before
accosting the both of us into the bed room. There weren't many things we could
do in an abandoned farmhouse like this and I was content to wait it out till
dark before going out hunting for my brother again.
"Tyler?"
I turned to the flushed looking vampire,
"Yea?"
"Thanks for looking out for me last night."
Aw, now it was my turn to blush.
