Serena crossed her feet at the ankles. She had on bright yellow canvas shoes and bright green ankle socks, neither of which really matched her dress, which had a pattern of little red rosebuds on a bright orange field. "Sorry. I was just interested. If you need someone to talk to, I'm always here."
"That's for sure," Fanny said. "Always here, always around, always studying or doing something equally nerdy. If I had a fun roommate, maybe I wouldn't be so anxious to get out of here."
Serena's face fell. "I can be fun."
"Oh yeah, like what? Stripping down to your bra and panties while you study? Whoop-dee-do!"
"No, I wouldn't do that." Serena's cheeks broke out in a deep blush.
Fanny hesitated for a moment before saying, "I'm not asking you to."
"I'm just a little self-conscious, that's all."
"So I noticed." Folding the top of her suitcase down, she crushed her clothes inside. "Damn it, I can't get this thing closed."
"Want me to help?" Serena asked.
"No." Fanny jumped on her soft-sided suitcase as her roommate looked on. It wasn't like her to feel bad after snapping at someone, but she did feel bad this time. She said, "I don't know what you've got to be self-conscious about. You've got a nice body, from what I've seen."
"Well, that's just it," Serena said shyly. "You haven't seen it all."
