Joann removed the gloves and nodded as she glanced around the large flat she'd just cleaned. She owned her own housecleaning business and worked the hours she wanted though she accommodated her clients. She had steady clients, some who wanted her once a week, and some who wanted her once a month. Still, it was enough she could afford a flat on the better side of town.

Her home was her sanctuary, and she loved being there. It was decorated in English garden fashion with beautiful muted pastels and vibrant yellows. She'd acquired the flat three years ago, after she had worked with her first steady clients. Living with a roommate was okay at times, but she longed for her own place, a place she may well decorate and relax without interruption.

Joann loved the neighbors on her left, a small family, husband and wife with a tiny baby. She watched them come and go as they strolled through the park up the road or have friends over for dinner parties. Sheila and Mike were quiet folks, and baby Edie was a delight. The baby only cried when hungry or wet and that didn't bother Joann. She'd even watched the infant on a couple of occasions when Sheila and Mike had to run errands and couldn't bring a baby along.

Saul lived on her right and they shared a wall at the bedrooms. He was a nice-looking man, tall with thick dark hair and a good build. Joann often wondered about his dating life since he was single. She saw herself dating a man like him. He always smiled when they passed one another. He worked as a landscaper, often coming in dirty and sweaty. Joann fantasized about them going into business together, with Saul working on the yard while she cleaned the interior, but she never voiced it to the man. He kept to himself otherwise. She wanted to invite him over for drinks, but every time she'd start to do it she'd discover he was having some other lady over to his flat.

Saul lived in the next door flat when Joann moved in. He had come over and offered to help unload the moving van, much to Joann's relief. The two movers were smaller men and struggled with her larger cushioned furniture. Saul effortlessly carried the pieces. He seemed interested then, and they had sat down to tea one afternoon where she dominated the conversation. He heard about her safe and secure life and that's the last time they'd had any social interaction. She'd thought he'd invite her over and through the months she contemplated on asking him for dinner, but he always had a date. Always. Much to Joann's disappointment.

The more Joann worked her jobs and the more she'd see Saul in passing, the more she wanted to see more of the neighbor. It became a challenge and many evenings he had a lady guest. It bought Joann down until she discovered their bedroom windows were close on the back of the flat and when the windows were open, the noises were loud coming from his bedroom.
