Emily had a small gathering when she settled into her new flat, well, new to her. She'd been working at the accounting firm for three years and lived in her parent's basement and saved up enough money to put a down payment on her own place. She was rather proud of the good deal she'd found on the older flat in a good location, close to work, and a nice safe albeit older neighborhood. She'd slapped on new paint and had the carpenters install new windows before she moved in and thought everything was settled.

A minor leak sprung up at the garbage disposal. Emily, ever the efficient and independent one, decided she could fix it and didn't need to call the plumber. The decision was two-fold. For one, she liked proving she could make minor repairs to the flat she owned. For another, she tapped out her savings when she purchased the flat and couldn't spare the money to pay a plumber.

After purchasing a new garbage disposal she'd found on sale at the hardware store, Emily crawled under the sink and worked on it. The pipes surrounding the device were too close, and she realized the disposal she'd bought was larger in the drum and she'd have to reroute one of the pipes. Shouldn't be that big a deal, cut off the water and just do it. The pipe that needed rerouted was the hot water and there was no way to turn it off at the sink. Emily walked to the hot water heater and discovered the valves to cut off the water there. After trying to turn the valve it wouldn't budge. She grabbed her wrench and twisted, and the valve broke off, not the pipe, but the ability to turn it on and off.

"Great. Now I have another problem to fix," Emily said and stood. Back to the hardware store she went and straight to the aisle with the copper pipes, fittings, and valves. But as she looked she got confused. A store clerk came to her rescue.

"This is what you need, water valve," the clerk said as he handed the package to her. Emily shook her head.

"No, this doesn't look like what broke," she said.

"Are you sure it was the water valve? Do you have gas?" the clerk asked.

"Gas? Yes, it's a gas hot water heater." The clerk reached for a different valve and handed it to Emily. "Yes, this is it."

"That's a gas line valve. You should not repair this yourself. You broke the gas valve. You're lucky you didn't break the line," the clerk said.

Emily raced back to the flat and checked, and sure enough, the pipe had the word gas line etched into it underneath. The water pipe was on the other side of the tank. Now she had not one but three issues to repair. The gas valve needed replaced. The garbage disposal needed replaced, and it was electric, and the leaky hot water pipe under the sink needed moved.
