Chapter 1

'Mr Clifford, you need not have followed me out here. I just wanted to get a breath of fresh air...alone!' Caroline hoped her meaning was clear to Jeremy Clifford, that she did not want or desire his company.

'Caroline why are you taking such a formal manner with me I thought we were past that now, please call me Jeremy as I have requested of you on several occasions,' he still spoke cheerfully.

'If you don't mind Mr Clifford I would prefer it if we stuck to a more formal address between us from now on.'

'Caroline,' Jeremy ignored her words completely, 'if I did not know any better I would think that you were doing your best to get rid of me?'

'Whatever would give you that impression?!' Caroline replied back not bothering to hide the sarcasm in her voice.

'Caroline, what is going on? Have I done or said something to offend you?'

He actually sounded concerned to her. Caroline could not help but feel a little guilty at her rude manner towards him as she looked up to meet Jeremy's baby blue eyes that looked down at her with the most intense gaze, and which were housed within a boyishly handsome face.

'No you have done nothing to upset me, that I know of in any case,' Caroline admitted, she did not know how to tell him that it was what she didn't know and what was in his mind that worried her, without sounding crazy and dramatic.
