Chapter 1

'Richard, you shouldn't have sent me the flowers, but thank you. They were really lovely, and they brightened up my day!'

Caroline looked at the dozen red roses sitting on her desk in front of her. They had arrived that morning and had caused quite a stir, with most of the females on the floor where she worked gathering around her, eager to get the details on both the sender of the flowers and the event that had triggered off her receiving such a romantic gift.

'Oh, that's no problem at all,' Richard's voice spoke back to her from his phone. 'I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you.'

'Were you now?' she teased.

'Caroline, why do you always mock me and my good intentions?' His voice sounded disheartened.

'Richard...I didn't mean to upset you. It was a lovely gesture, and I do appreciate the effort you made.'

'Great! That's good to hear. How about grabbing a film with me this evening and having a quick bite to eat afterwards?'

'I don't know if that's a good idea.'

'Why? We haven't hung out for some time now. We used to catch films together all the time. Unless you're busy...again?'

'No, it's not that...I suppose...yes, let's catch a film. That would be nice...but strictly as friends.'

Richard remained silent on the other end of the phone, but then said, 'Okay, that's fine; we can keep it to a friendly affair.'

She was relieved at his reply. 'See you later, then.'

'Yes, I will pick you up at eight, at yours. Bye for now.'

'Bye, Richard.' She put down the phone with a sigh.

'I am guessing that was Richard?' Sue, her best friend and work colleague who sat next to her in the office, was eager to know the details of her call.
