For several months, as she struggles to adjust to her new life on Oahu, she and Bonnie draw closer. Though Bonnie still enjoys sex with men on occasion, she finds herself falling completely in love for the first time in her life with Natalie. As the outside world descends into chaos and bloodshed, Natalie's own life and the lives of her family eventually fall into a comfortable and contented pattern as she finds a place with a local "all-girl" band and the love she shares with Bonnie grows ever deeper.

It all comes crashing to an end one dark December morning. Suddenly, Natalie's world is turned upside-down as America enters the global conflict.
