STORY DESCRIPTION

R.J., a young scientist and translator of ancient texts, is under a lot of pressure at work. She has doms for breakfast, lunch and dinner. None can deliver the hard edge style of play that she craves. Spencer comes closest, but even when he says enough she's ready to tear everything apart, and nearly does one night at an SM club she frequents. Not even Spencer's offer of introducing her to a dom who might, finally, be what she is looking for placates her. R.J. refuses and, after interfering with another couple's scene because she thinks it's too soft, leaves in anger.

Frustrated at not being able to decipher an ancient text, she meets Ben Washburn for dinner. Ben drops hints that he knows about R.J.'s fiery, submissive nature. After breaking the date off abruptly, R.J. meets Mr. Lawson, a street peddler, and she's given a wooden figure of a bound woman. That night, she dreams the translation solution and rushes back to work and finds the texts tell of an advanced civilization. Ben comes in with a figure of a master he got from Mr. Lawson and R.J. snatches it and rushes to search for him to find out his game. She finds him on an el platform but then she passes out.

R.J. awakes in an arboreal forest and is enslaved by Targon, a man who reminds her of Spencer. Targon calls her Ramla as he takes her and others, on his barge to the city of Arun-na-Volin. At Targon's house, a black-robed and masked man offers to buy R.J. for an anonymous client, rather than wait for her to be trained, but Targon rejects the offer.

R.J. is lined up for inspection with other slaves before Chief Scribe Bakaru and High Priestess Vanis. They search for those who can remember a previous life. Sensing a chance to escape her situation, R.J. attempts to speak of her life in Chicago but her efforts are taken for rebellion and she is tied and gagged.

Afraid for her sanity, R.J. knows she must escape back to her own realm, but how?
