In the latest book of Julie and her family's enslavement, Dowd
continues to leave the reader on the edge, never knowing the fate of
any of the slaves the Penns own. The invention of new methods to
encourage submission in combination with the attention to detail
brings the reader in the room where the scenes unfold.
The writer continues to visit moments and places from previous novels,
reminding us how we got where we are in this latest installment of a
great series
