STORY DESCRIPTION

Nokaadad is an artificial planet that is on a very long journey. The journey is so long that most of the inhabitants have forgotten the purpose of the journey... or even that they are on a journey. All they know is that they live in a very small, closed society that can only continue to exist if there is complete peace and complete forgiveness. They also know that to maintain that peace and forgiveness on their very small planet, the "controller," hundreds of years ago, instituted an annual punishment faire.

The punishments at this faire fit the offences and range from mild shaming to severe spanking, flogging, or caning. Such a program of atonement and punishment has worked to preserve the society for over 700 years. But this year something different occurs. The controller makes its first appearance to the people since the Punishment Faires were originally created.

The chapters begin with introducing the villages of the planet of Nokaadad and the origins of the Punishment Faires. Then a loophole in the laws of Nokaadad is explored. The very first day of the faire, called the Day of Celebration, is not counted in the year just finished and isn't a part of the new year. So that day is an opportunity for unbridled sex inside the unused punishment tents. That sex and the breaking of any social morals doesn't even have to be reported to the controller in the annual sessions in the confession booths. After all, last year is forgotten in the new year so slate of those wrongs is wiped clean.

The chapters then get increasingly more severe as the story explores The Tent of Atonement, where people atone for minor wrongs which bother their conscience; The Tent of Severe Atonement, which allows for atonement for more serious offences; The Tent of Punishment, which involves judicial punishments for various crimes against Nokian society; The Tent of Severe Punishment, which involves some rather harsh punishments for more severe crimes; and "Grandmother's Day," which is held in an outdoor arena and involves the most severe punishments of all.

Grandmother's Day is the last day of the Faire. And that is where the Faire is supposed to end. But this year, at the end of Grandmother's Day, the controller makes a surprise appearance with his mechanical men and extends the Faire an addition day. The purpose of the additional day is to address a new fire of evil which the controller has discovered burning in Nokaadad. It says that it has appeared in order to extinguish that fire of evil. What that evil is and the controllers method of extinguishing it finish this story of The Punishment Faires of Nokaadad.
