Implantation and alien creatures can admittedly give me the heebie-jeebies, but for fans of such darker erotica themes, it's all brought to very vivid life, both unsettling and darkly fascinating. Beyond that, the worldbuilding is astonishingly detailed and the narrative far more ambitious than any ordinary erotica: it easily rivals any mainstream science-fiction story that I've read, and is thoroughly researched and scientifically literate. The future society it portrays is one that's very plausible, and the characters, from the shyly curious Amber to the much more forthright, cynically confident Ornella, are all drawn in nuanced, realistic strokes. In a dystopian future, young women are recruited to serve as hosts in a secretive alien breeding program. Their reasons for joining are varied, but they know their participation will make them wealthy. Yet, as the nightmarish prologue vividly demonstrates, the program is not without its risks--or its terrors. After the prologue, the story follows Amber, a young woman driven by financial need to apply for the breeding program.
Xenofestation reads like an erotic blend of Blade Runner and Alien. The future world is convincingly depicted, the suspense is palpable, and the eroticism is creative yet understated. The only negative thing I can say about Xenofestation 1-01 is that it isn't a standalone novel, but rather the first part of a longer work, and you will need to read the sequels to see what fate awaits Amber. Incredibly suspenseful and vivid scenes, well-drawn characters, and vast, complex worldbuilding seamlessly integrated into the narrative, a future that feels all too real. As cliche as it sounds, the story really does grab you from the first page, and doesn't let go. So much erotica is porn-y, or cheesy, or downright cringey. But the sex is beautifully done, as is the social commentary. I've read plenty of traditionally published authors that could learn a thing or six from Paragonas's writing. (Goodreads) For fans of the monster/creature erotica genre, I would highly recommend this series. The world building is realistic without being overbearing and weaves into the story seamlessly. The character development really draws you in, sharing their inner conflicts as characters you will care about as their story progresses.
