The man at the counter recognized him; Jared knew it when their eyes met. He dropped a
five dollar bill on the counter and grabbed the two bottles of water, running for the
door. The man had the phone in his hand as Jared got the door open and he heard him saying
"They're here."
Elias smiled as Jared emerged from the building, but the smile faded quickly. "What?"
Jared shook his head. "We have to go."
"Let me finish."
Too late. Three vans were pulling in, people with cameras and microphones pouring out of
them, questions filling the air. Elias shoved the nozzle back into the pump and came to
Jared's side of the car, shielding him and getting the door open. "Get in. I'll get us out
of here."
Jared didn't argue, hiding his face as Elias pushed his way through them to climb back
behind the wheel. He got the door closed and locked and reached for his phone. "Where the
hell are you? We've got press all over us." Elias leaned forward to look as two men tried
to climb onto the hood of the car. "Now."
Jared was shaking as Elias turned to him, taking his hand and kissing his knuckles. "It's
okay, our guys are coming. They'll handle this." Jared nodded, but kept his face averted
from the cameras, holding up his hand to block them. "Are you okay?"
"What do you mean?" Elias asked.
"Pictures." Jared looked up at him. "They took pictures of me on my knees for you."
Elias's hand cupped his cheek. "It's going to be okay, Jared. This will die down soon.
Some Hollywood starlet will go out boozing and flash her tits, and they'll leave us
alone."
