A world of women - there are no men, but some women are
Beasts, able to grow a phallus and impregnate others. Tanre
is Queen and Beast of her tribe, the Eshkalya. When they
capture women of opposing tribes in battle, all of Tanre's
warriors get to join in the fun of torturing the prisoners,
and the other Eshkalya warrior stand around watching and
shouting encouragement as Tanre drives her brutal
Beast-Shaft into the captives to teach them their place as
underlings.
But things are changing, in Tanre and in the world. Tanre's
Beast-Gift does not come at her will, but when it wants. The
Beast within her is a living thing, an ever-mounting power
that is beyond her control. Tanre finds herself changing at
any time, without wishing it, and her body transforms into
new shapes each time that are more and more powerful, less
and less human.
Changes are happening in the world too. Tanre leads her
tribe into a great battle against the Tarsa, invaders from
the west, but she has a fit during the charge. When she
wakes, the Eshkalya and their allies are dead or scattered.
The Tarsa have won. Now the lone Queen of a vanished tribe,
Tanre wanders and joins up with the remnants of others
defeated by the Tarsa.
These wanderers plan to work for the Tarsa as mercenaries,
and lacking anything better to do Tanre goes with them. But
in the Tarsa lands, Tanre's Gift will not be still. She
transforms in a Tarsa town and runs rampage, killing slaves
and soldiers indiscriminately. Recognised as a Beast of
frightening power, Tanre is sent to the Telharna, the court
of the Queen of Tarsa, where the greatest beasts in the land
are trained. Here Tanre enters a world of new sensations and
new responsibilities. And she enters a dangerous pool of
political sharks, where all may not be as it seems, and
innocent-sounding words may mask twisted hidden purposes...
